Schloss Church in Putbus

Up until the year 1840, Putbus was a part of the parish of Vilmnitz. In the same year, its own church records were purchased and its own church burial grounds were inaugurated .Putbus became an independent church parish. Over time it became necessary to complete new church buildings. In 1835 Putbus had 800 residents, sixty years later it had 1.400 residents. Initially the theatre was in line to be converted into a church. However when this plan was overturned due to opposition from the residents, the Kur Salon, in the park was used as the church. In the years 1891-92 the Galleries were removed and the windows moved inside and the open arcades leading to the ballroom were fitted with windows. A three-aisled church room was created. In the north extension, a church tower was erected, the south extension kept its shape. On Reformationstag 1892, the church was consecrated; the bells rang for the first time on 12. July 1893.
Furnishings belonging to the church include lights, the cross, the Alter picture and two wooden sculptures, rescued from the Schloβ fire of 1866. The organ was built in 1892 by B. Grüneberg, Stettin..
Since then many years passed by and the Schloß Church needed a comprehensive renovation. For the roof renovation, as well as a partial development of the southern extension, thanks must be given to the many helpers and generous donations of money over the last ten years. The clearstory and the two top floors of the tower received a new coat of paint, succeeding the previous coat of paint from1892. The Schloß church differs impressively from the typical red brick churches of the island. It is flooded with light; large arched windows allow an open view of the park, and forms, along with the other Classical buildings in and around the park, an impressive ensemble.

Visitors a warmly invited to come and find a moment of peace or time to reflect.

St. Jacobs Church - Kasnevitz

From far away you are greeted by the sight of the slim tower topped with a solid spire of St. Jacobs’s church in Kasnevitz . This tower has had two predecessors before it. In the second half of the 14th century the choir and vestry of the church were built and shortly after, the nave was added. It was only in medieval times that the tower was built. The chroniclers mentioned a tower, supposedly built of bricks and covered with copper. On the 1st Sunday in advent 1641, it collapsed;” The undamaged and well loved bells were hung on an oak tree growing very close to the church . . .a new bell tower was built in 1768 and the current church tower was completed in1864.” (Haas). The total cost of the new towers amounted to up to 4.256 Reichstaler. In addition, the patron of the church – the house of Putbus, donated 20,000 building bricks. The construction work was carried out by local master craftsmen, almost exclusively residents of Putbus. At the nave of the church, the high lancet window is remarkable. In 1990/91 the interior of the church was cleaned and newly painted. The pulpit was originally directly at the altar. In 1958 it was taken down and attached to its current position at the triumphal arch. Next to it is a sand clock which indicates the length of the sermon to the preacher! The names of the preachers, dating back to the Reformation, are recorded on a special board near the pulpit. Guests are warmly welcomed.

Maria Magdalena Church in Vilmnitz

The emergence of the Vilmnitzer church possibly leads back to Stoislaw I., a brother of the Prince Jaromar I of Rügen., who lived around the year 1200. In the first documentation, in the year 1249, it said that the parish of "Vylmenytze" was part of the hereditary goods belonging to the Borante of Borantenhagen, whose ancestors had founded the parish.
The oldest part of the church is the east choir with the vestry, which still exhibit clearly Roman elements. The nave was established in the middle of the 14th century and was renewed in the 15th century. The tower was completed a little later. From 1351 the church of Vilmnitz
was the burial ground for the Royal family of Putbus . In the vault under the east-choir, which can still be visited today, stand 28 coffins, some made of wood, some made of metal and all displaying outstanding artistic handwork of the highest quality. The town founder – Prince Wilhelm Malte and his wife, were the last to be buried here (1854 and 1860). Since 1867, the
Mausoleum, in Putbus Schloβ Park, has been the burial ground for the royal family of Putbus.
Especially worth seeing for their extravagance, are the 4 large epitaphs from the year 1600 in the chancel as well as the Baroque chancel from 1708/09. In 1996 the historic Mehmel organ
was restored. For over 25 years, in the summer months, weekly concerts have taken place on Thursday evenings.
